It took their eyes a moment to adjust to the gloom. The roof was so low the atmosphere was oppressive. The pub was pretty quiet because of the time of day. The landlord, who was called Lonny and was Derekâs biggest rival, was standing behind the bar reading a newspaper. Casually, he glanced up to see who the new arrivals were and did a double take.
âWhat the hell are you lot doing in here?â he demanded, tossing the newspaper onto the top of the bar.
They ignored him as they looked around for the man whoâd followed Jack.
âOy, are you deaf?â he exclaimed.
Carly hurried over to him, taking out her phone. âHave you seen this man?â
âWhy? What the fuck is this, Crimewatch?â
âJust answer the question.â
âIâm answering nothing. Now bugger off out of it, youâre noâ welcome here.â
âUseless as always, Lonny,â she replied.
âThatâs it,â he said, charging out from behind the bar and storming over to her. Before he could reach Carly, her cousins placed themselves in his way and his bravado wilted.
âAnswer her,â Harry growled at him.
âNo, I havenae seen him. Now piss off,â yelled Lonny.
âHe must be telling the truth,â said Carly. âHeâs not here.â
A door at the back of the room opened and out walked Cole and Ross. âWhy are you shouting now, Lonny?â demanded the latter. His eyes settled on the three Savages. âWhat the fuck are you lot doing here?â
âWhy shouldnât we come here?â said Carly. âYouâre always popping into The Horseshoe where youâre not wanted.â
âThey were wantinâ to know if someone had come in here,â Lonny told the Alexanders.
âWho?â Ross frowned.
At that moment, the mystery man in the baseball cap appeared behind Cole and Ross.
âHim,â said Lonny.
âWhy do you want to know about him?â Ross asked the Savages.
âBecause he just waved his willy at a group of young girls outside the corner shop,â said Carly.
Dean and Harry glanced at each other in surprise but said nothing, respecting her quick thinking.
âNo, I didnât,â exclaimed the mystery man. âIâd never do anything like that.â
âAye, ya would, ya dirty bastard,â said Carly. âThose lassies were only twelve years old at the most.â
âI didnât,â he cried when everyone in the pub turned to regard him with disgust, except Ross and Cole.
âCourse you didnât,â said Ross. âSheâs lying to make you look bad.â
âWhy would I want to make him look bad?â said Carly. âI donât even know him. We just happened to stop at the shop and the lassies were there, crying. We said weâd sort out the bastard for them,â she added with a glower at the mystery man.
âPaedos arenât allowed in my pub,â Lonny told the Alexanders.
âIâm noâ a paedo,â cried the man. âThere werenât even any weans outside the shop. I went in, bought some ciggies and came straight here. Why donât you go and ask the woman working in the shop? Sheâll tell you.â
âHow would she know?â said Carly. âIt all happened outside the shop.â
âWe know you didnae do anything,â Cole told the man while keeping his gaze riveted on Carly.
